A pair of websites has ranked Plano among the country’s best cities for single people older than 50.
OurTime, a dating app and website for people over 50, and SeniorAdvice.com, a senior housing referral service, last week put the Collin County city 12th on its top 15 list — ahead of Miami and not far behind Honolulu and New York City.
The joint study based its rankings on a hodgepodge of factors, including warm weather, the amount of singles over 50 in the area, social activities, cost of living, quality and availability of healthcare.
Plano benefited from Texas’ lack of state income tax and the city’s affordability, said Lori Thomas, a representative from Senior Advice. Thomas also said Plano is “situated in an interesting area” in North Texas that has “fun restaurants and social activities.”
Pittsburgh, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Cleveland were ranked as the top three, respectively, for over-50 singles. No other Texas cities ranked in the top 15.
In a news release, OurTime said the number of 50-plus single adults is on the rise nationally. And many of them, like their younger counterparts, are turning to dating apps. Dallas-based Match said in 2016 that the over-50 crowd was its fastest-growing dating group.
Amy Canaday, a representative from OurTime, said in an email that half of singles over 50 believe the biggest misconception about them is that they’re not interested in sex.
“The desire for sexual intimacy only seems to increase or remain consistent over time, contrary to popular belief,” Canaday said.
Canaday said older adults have a better idea of what they’re looking for than younger singles. Over 50 singles’ top three dating deal breakers in potential partners are financial instability, smoking and pessimism, she said.
And generally, older adults aren’t looking as much for hookups; they want love, said Bela Gandhi, founder and president of Smart Dating Academy.
“It doesn’t have to result in marriage, but they want to have some fun in their dating life,” Gandhi said. “But the end goal is to find a long term committed partner.”
